Richard Bismarck : The Q and A :
.
If you were in charge of making the environment better what would you do?
Make it illegal to throw useful things away. If an item is useful and you don't want it, either sell it or give it to someone. Throwing litter is disgusting and anyone doing it should be ashamed of themselves. It encourages rats and injures other creatures.
In your career with the Album Zone and the thousands of songs that you've played have you ever played anything that changed a listeners life?
Not that I'm aware of. If you know different, let me know.
Have you ever considered quitting AZ ? And why ?
Not on your nellie.
Anything you've done that you have really regretted ? Care to tell ?
There are plenty of girls I regret I never had the courage to ask out in my school days. I've also done some stupid things in my time. But haven't we all?
It doesn't pay. Why do you do it ?
In a way that makes it better. I do it because I love it. I have a 9-5 job so my survival is not a worry to me.
What's the best thing about doing AZ ?
Communication. Sharing music with friends (How trite!)
And the worst ?
Suddenly a piece of music will enter my head (not through my ears) and I want to play it on the show. But.… I cannot track it down. It's a wee bit frustrating.
Favourite city or town - and why ?
Um, I remember liking Oslo when I went there on holiday as a child. We were at a campsite on a hill overlooking the city on a beautiful summers night.
Do you miss doing 'Live' Shows ?
Yes, I miss meeting my AZ colleagues when we used to travel to the Netherlands or France (or the Northsea). I'm a bit isolated in my little house amongst the rolling hills of Nottinghamshire.
Do you have a favourite record of all time - or are there just too many ?
That is an impossible question to answer. It changes from day to day. Try "In My Life" by The Beatles
Where have you never travelled - but really want to visit ?
I fancy a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Anyone care to join me?
Ever thought of doing 'all talk' programmes ?
No. Ex Album Zone person James Barclay would be great at it though.
Do you ever listen to any of the other AZ Presenters shows ?
If so, which ones and why ?
Britain. T
Absolutely. I listen to everyone. Each one has their own choice and style. Unlike the commercial stations of hey all sound exactly the same. What is the point in that?
Got pets ? What ?
No. But I once had a grey squirrel living in my roof space.
what's the funniest / saddest / strangest
thing to happen while doing (live ??) shows on the radio ?
The funniest thing was many years ago: I was on a student radio station in Loughborough. Someone thought it would be a great idea to do the first show of the new term from the studio roof with speakers blaring out music across the campus. It was a sunny day. Each DJ did a stint.
When my turn came I took up position, said a few words and someone threw a bucket of water over me! That person was one Steve Satan (now ex-Radio Caroline and occasional AZ presenter). It was even funnier because the radio desk shorted out and stopped working! Once the laughter had died down someone remembered that the desk was owned by the Students Union and what's more there was to be a disco that evening. Hurriedly and urgently we found as many hairdryers as we could lay our hands on and blew hot air into it's inner workings to dry it out.
What was really embarrassing ?
Having difficulty staying awake when doing the Album Zone at 5 am @ Merlin Network One.
who's the sexiest girl / boy singer for you ?
Emiliana Torrini. She is just a genuine gentle person. (as far as I can tell)
sexiest record ?
Midnight at the Oasis - Maria Muldaur
please tell us something about your biography, we don't know much about you... where are you from, where are you now ? And where are you going ?
Born and bred in the wilds of Nottinghamshire, England. Born in a snowstorm. The snowstorm was outside I was inside. The village was cut off. The midwife and doctor had to walk the mile to my house to attend to my birth.
Futurewise I think I may travel the world.
AZ has been going 10 years. Will you still be doing it in 10 years time ?
If people want the Album Zone and I still enjoy it why not?
Would you like a job with a national radio station ?
Are you offering? I don't charge much.
Favourite Album ?
Another impossible question. How about First Band on the Moon by the Cardigans?
Does a lot of advance planning go into your programmes, or do you just sit down and get on with it ?
You wouldn't believe it. When I get a new album my routine is to listen to the album 3 times in order, then put my CD player onto random (things sound different in a different order) and listen again. I then mark the best tracks to play. If I know the music I well I list it ready for the show. I often know what the 1st track is weeks before I record the show.
Anything else you'd like to add ?
I think Steve may need to edit this!
